Grass fire by Long Lake

NEW LONDON — The New London Fire Department responded to a grass fire Monday afternoon that burned about six acres of grass.

There were no structures affected by the fire, which was reported at around 3:15 p.m. on the northside of Long Lake, located near Hawick in northern Kandiyohi County.

New London Fire Chief Anthony Rupp said it's believed the fire started from a brush pile. Even though there has been recent rain and snow, Rupp said the grass has not turned green yet, which creates an environment for grass fires that burn fast and spread quickly.

Mutual aid was provided by the Spicer Fire Department.

Crews were on the scene for about 1½ hours.

The state Department of Natural Resources in a news release Monday said much of Minnesota is still dry enough to fuel a dangerous wildfire, and the DNR urges people not to burn debris piles until foliage greens up.
