Flying umbrella shatters windshield

WILLMAR - A Willmar woman was shaken up but uninjured during a freak accident Monday afternoon when an outdoor table umbrella at a restaurant broke off in a wind gust and struck her vehicle.

The force of the impact shattered the driver's side window of the 2017 Dodge Caravan the woman was driving, spraying glass shards in and around the vehicle.

The woman told the West Central Tribune she was at Culver's restaurant on 19th Avenue Southeast in Willmar at around 5:15 p.m. when a gust of wind blew the umbrella with such force that it broke away from the stand and struck her vehicle window.

She said she felt lucky she was not impaled by the umbrella.

The woman told the Tribune she was unable to drive the vehicle and Willmar police gave her a ride home.
