Northwoods League: Stingers wind up splitting with Larks

It beats BBE 4-1 for the West Central East Division title

BISMARCK,N.D. — The Willmar Stingers head into the Northwoods League’s All-Star break having split a weekend series with the Bismarck Larks.

Bismarck beat Willmar 11-6 on Sunday before 1,664 fans at Bismarck Municipal Ballpark.

On Saturday, the Stingers beat Bismarck 10-4.

Sunday’s game was tied 1-1 until Bismarck scored two in the bottom of the third. The Larks then added five in the fourth and three in the fifth to cruise to the victory.

Willmar rallied for four runs in the eighth, but that was all the Stingers could muster.


Three Stingers had two hits Sunday: Carter Howell, William Hamiter and Drey Dirksen.

Howell, playing center field and leading off, went 2-for-4 with two runs, a walk and an RBI. The Augustana University redshirt junior from Moorhead is batting .291 (50 of 172) with 38 runs, six doubles, two triples, five homers and 28 RBI. He also has 17 stolen bases.

Hamiter, a redshirt freshman from the University of Alabama, went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and an RBI. He’s hitting .347 (43 of 124) with 21 RBI and five stolen bases.

Dirksen, the Willmar Senior High grad who plays at Augustana, caught and batted seventh Sunday. He went 2-for-3 with two walks and a run. He has his batting average up to .209 (24 of 115) with five doubles, three homers and 12 RBI.

Willmar is 6-8 in the second half standings for the Great Plains West Division, four games behind division-leading St. Cloud (10-4). The Stingers are 22-28 overall.

The all-star game is Tuesday in Mankato. Willmar returns to action at 7:05 p.m. Thursday against the Minnesota Mud Puppies at Bill Taunton Stadium.

William Hamiter went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI and Jack Zigan went six innings to pick up the victory for the Willmar Stingers on Saturday before 1,853 fans at Bismarck Municipal Ballpark.

Zigan, a right-hander from Eden Prairie and Minnesota State-Mankato, struck out nine and walked one in six innings. He allowed five hits and one earned run to boost his record to 3-3 with a 5.45 earned-run average in 33 innings. He has struck out 40 and walked six.
