Willmar Police subdue man, take into custody after standoff at residence

Claude Junior Hughes passed away on March 4, 2018, surrounded by family at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar, Minnesota. A memorial service is scheduled for 1:00 pm, Saturday, April 28, 2018, at Bethel Lutheran Church, 411 Becker Avenue SW, Willmar, Minnesota 56201. Coffee and bars will be served afterward. Visitation will be one hour prior to his service at the church. Burial will follow a few weeks after the service at River Valley Memorial Gardens in West Dundee, Illinois. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

Claude was born October 11, 1924, in Long Point, IL, the second of five children of Claude Thadius Hughes and Leah Blanche (Colehower) Hughes. He grew up in Long Point and graduated from high school there.

Claude served in the Army, stationed in Italy, from 1943 until the end of 1945.

After the war, he went to college and graduated from Bradley University, Peoria, IL, in 1951, with a degree in Business. It was during his college years that he met Elinor Schneider and married her on September 4, 1948. Through the next three and a half decades, Claude and Elinor raised 5 children. His career as a Buyer and later as Vice President-Merchandising with Jewel Companies, Inc. spanned over 30 years.

He is survived by his children Charles Stephen (Isabel) Hughes of Park Ridge, IL; Gary Claude (Lorie) Hughes of Billings, MT; James Richard (Maria) Hughes of Spicer, MN; Nancy Ellan (Bradley) Anderson of Redwood Falls, MN; and Christina Ann Hughes of Redwood Falls, MN; his grandchildren Carl (Cayenne) Hughes; John (Mandy) Hughes; Sarah (fianc Nick) Hughes; Michael (Heena) Hughes; Amy (fianc Colby) Hughes; Lisa (Neil) White; Kimberly (Zach) Hughes; Laura (Curt) Elpers; Elizabeth (Joran) Clute; Julie (special friend Dylon) Anderson; his great-grandchildren Elinor Hughes; Ryan, Bryce, & Gabriella White; and Connor & Jacob Elpers; his brother Ronald (Barb) Hughes of Greenville, SC; and sister Kathleen Hawdon of Hayden, ID; and many nieces and nephews.

Claude was preceded in death by his beloved wife Elinor (Schneider) Hughes; his brother Richard and wife Pam Hughes; and his sister Elizabeth and husband Donald Mahnke.

Claude also says farewell to his close friends Jim Moore and Nancy and Randy Swanson.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Bethesda for the care they provided.
