Dorcas J. Gravley, 89 of New London, died Thursday, November 8, 2018 at the St. Cloud Hospital. Memorial services will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday, November 11, 2018 at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. Visitation will be from 5- 7 p.m. Saturday at church and for one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in New London. Dorcas Joan Gravley was born on Easter Sunday, March 31, 1929, the only child to Jim and Hertha Cottle. She was baptized in the hospital nursery on April 1, 1929. She grew up in Minneapolis and was confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in 1943. She graduated from Washburn High School in 1947 and St. Cloud Teacher's College in 1949. She later went on and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from St. Cloud State University.
On June 23, 1951, Dorcas was united in marriage to Kenneth Gravley. This union was blessed with a son and daughter. They made their home in New London where she taught at New London Elementary for 37 years and enjoyed every single hour of her career. She continued to keep in contact with many of her former students.
Dorcas was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, attended weekly bible study, was a member of ELCW and Cana circle and served on numerous committees. She enjoyed reading, cats, fishing with her split bamboo fly rod, riding her bike, spending time with friends, and writing poems and stories. Her greatest joy was being with family and celebrating birthdays, holidays and special events. She was a great whistler and once whistled several hymns for a friend's funeral.
Dorcas is survived by her husband of 67 years, Kenneth; son, Jay (Beth) Gravley and daughter, Jane (Dan) Morrison; grandchildren, Elyse (Eric) Hagen, Joshua (Kimmy) Gravley, Jason Gravley, Chris (Abby) Morrison, Ben Morrison, David Morrison, and Sam (Taylor) Morrison and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and grandson, Mitchell Morrison.
