Donald Wayne Sampson


Donald Wayne Sampson, 76, of Willmar, died Tuesday, December 17th at his home. His memorial service will be 10:30 am, Friday, December 27th at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Willmar. Visitation will be one hour prior to his service at the church. Burial will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis at a later date. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

Don was born May 24, 1943, to Bill and Lola (Lunsford) Sampson at his uncle’s house in Hilton, VA. While growing up, Don worked at his grandpa’s flour mill and also helped on the family farm where he would grow and harvest tobacco. When Don was 17 years old, his mother signed for Don to be able to join the Army. He honorably served in the Vietnam War for three years, serving as an Airborne Ranger and also in Special Forces. Don continued to serve his country for 17-1/2 years. During his time in the service, he played baseball for the Army team and enjoyed riding in many rodeos. On May 15, 1972, Donald was united in marriage to Dianne Tongen in Columbus, GA. Don and Dianne moved to Tennessee in 1977, eventually moving to Minnesota in 1982. Don began working at Harvester Construction, where he built silos and eventually worked at Tongen Construction, where he worked as a service technician. Don enjoyed fishing, baseball and spending time with his family and friends. He was a loving husband, father, grandpa and friend.

Don is survived by his wife, Dianne; children: Alan Sampson and Louis Sampson both of Georgia; Kirk (Amy) Sampson of Chanhassen, Patty (Clint) Skoglund of Rochester, Lisa (Terry Mills) Sampson of Fargo, ND, and Joshua (Heather) Sampson of New London; grandchildren: Kevin, Emma, Hannah, Katelyn, Kalli, Inga, Faith, Piper and Violet; sisters: Beverly and Helen; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Charles R.; and sisters: Ana Ruth, Margaret and Betty.
