Gladys L. Lungstrom, 97, of New London, died Monday, February 1, 2021 at GlenOaks Assisted Living in New London. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Gladys Lucille (Galbrecht) Lungstrom was born on January 1, 1924 in Clements, MN, to William F. Galbrecht and Marie (Kahle) Galbrecht. She was baptized on February 10, 1924 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Clements and confirmed in her faith on February 28, 1938 at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Montevideo, MN. She graduated from Montevideo High School in 1941.

She attended the Windom College Normal School in Montevideo and began her teaching career at the age of 18 in a rural one-room school in Clara City, MN. She taught for four more years in rural schools and in later years earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in education from St. Cloud State University.

Gladys was united in marriage to Donald W. Lungstrom on June 29, 1946 at Wooddale Lutheran Church in St. Louis Park, MN. They were blessed with four children.

In 1956 Don and Gladys returned to New London. Gladys taught elementary grades and her specialty, reading, at Old Grey, Spicer, and Prairie Woods Elementary in the New London-Spicer school district from 1965 - 1986. Upon retirement Gladys obtained a certificate for Sign Language from the St. Paul Technical College at Ridgewater in Willmar, MN.

Gladys was an active member of Lebanon Lutheran Church and Peace Lutheran, serving over the years as a Sunday School teacher, in Ladies Circle, Church Council and Bible studies.

She not only enjoyed her teaching career, but was also an avid reader, seamstress, quilter, did candlewicking and loved to bake. She will be remembered for her delicious apple pies, monster cookies, and numerous special recipes. She always had a large garden and enjoyed teaching her visiting grandchildren about the garden and also canned most everything.

Learning was a passion throughout her life. She learned calligraphy and became proficient in it. She also loved to play the piano or organ with family around her. One of her favorite childhood memories is of accompanying her four sisters while they sang for the neighbors. Another childhood favorite was an Easter memory. Her mother would make little straw nests and put 1-2 dyed, hardboiled eggs inside and hide them all around the foundation of their house for the nine children to find. Gladys and her 4 sisters and 4 brothers enjoyed many decades of reunions where they would share these memories and stories of growing up together.

Gladys died Monday, February 1st, 2021 at Glen Oaks Personal Care Suites in New London at the age of 97. She is survived by her brother Elmer Galbrecht, Virginia Beach, VA and sister Pearl Kendall, Canyon Lake, TX; four children: Teresa (Steve) Richardson of Lyons, OR; Bruce (Dawn) Lungstrom of Spicer, MN; James Lungstrom of Rosemount, MN; and Susan (Jeff) Marion of Blacksburg, VA.
