Shirley Mae Remillard

Shirley Mae Remillard, of Weslaco, Texas, died Monday, Dec. 6, 2021. She was 87.

She was born Jan. 9, 1934, in Bird Island, Minn., to Merle James and Luella Alberta Johanna (Schroeder) Brooks.

She married Donald Edwin “Ed” Houchin Nov. 8, 1952, in Rapid City, S.D.

Ed served for 20 years in the U.S. Air Force. After his retirement in 1971, they settled in Minnesota with their family. They divorced in 1975.

Shirley married Darold Wayne “Rem” Remillard June 18, 1994, in Spicer.

She loved gardening, crossword puzzles, cards, games, puzzling, quilting, reading and word games on her tablet. She was an avid Bridge player.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Margie M. Smith; first husband, Donald Houchin; second husband, Darold Remillard; stepson, Mike Remillard; and great-grandsons, Gavin Scharmer and Bennett Scharmer.

She is survived by her close friend, D.C. Freemyer; her children, Janet (Mark) McDougall, Barry (Nancy) Houchin, Julie (Tom) Springer, Lu Jean (Bruce) Drew, and Joni (George) Hemmesch; stepchildren, Faith Remillard and Bruce Remillard; 10 grand-children; 11 great-grandchildren; her nieces, Lynn Lord and LuAnne (Tom) Wright; and many other family and friends.

A Memorial Gathering for family and friends is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 29, 2022, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at River of Life Church in Cold Spring, Minn.
