Alex Davis: We must fight for all immigrants

Reader Opinion letter

Why won’t people stop comparing Trump to Hitler?

Can there really be a comparison? After all, Trump is fighting for the American people, and Hitler was responsible for the mass genocide of 6 million Jews.

We need to take a step back and look at, not the outcome, but the rise of the Nazi party and how it all went wrong.

One of the earlier texts, called The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, was published in 1903. This text accused people of the Jewish faith of planning world domination. Strangely similar to the phobia many have today that Muslims are attempting to take over the USA and force Sharia law on American citizens.

Fast-forward to 1933, when Adolph Hitler was appointed Chancellor. One of the first laws enacted was Berufsbeamtengeset (The Law for the Restoration of Professional Civil Service).

This law forced those not of Aryan descent to retire. While this law did not specifically mention Jews, it is who we now know were targeted.

Hitler continuously spoke of the people he did not like as Untermenschen, or sub-human.

This example is quite obviously relatable to Donald Trump enacting the Muslim travel ban, as well as speaking of immigrants and refugees as they are Untermenschen. “They’re not sending their best; they are not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems.”

If you continue to go through new laws and policies of early Nazi Germany, as well as the United States today, you should have a feeling of weltschmerz.

Philosopher George Santayana said: “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

Let’s not let things escalate to the point they did in Germany during WWII.

Let’s stand up for our brothers and sisters. No matter what your beliefs, we are all on this merry-go-round together.

Also, 98.4% of us in the USA are descendants of immigrants traced back to the last 500 years.

This next election, please consider putting human lives over irrational fears, propaganda, or the promise of a few more bucks in your wallet.
