A sign of distress or danger.

It got me thinking about what Judge J. Michael Luttig, an influential conservative retired federal judge, said recently: “[T]he former president and his party are today a clear and present danger for American democracy.”

Judge Luttig advised then Vice President Pence that former President Trump was wrong to pressure Pence to ignore the certified electors of swing states and declare Trump the winner on Jan. 6, 2021.

On Jan 5, 2021 Judge Luttig tweeted Pence telling him, “The only responsibility and power of the Vice President under the Constitution is to faithfully count the electoral college votes as they have been cast.”

What Trump demanded was illegal, unconstitutional, and un-American. And that same disregard for our laws and Constitution persists among many Trump supporters today.

That is why Judge Luttig sees a clear and present danger.

I will not fly my American flag upside down this Fourth of July, because “Who would come to our aid but ourselves?”

We as Americans must guard our democracy, all of us, whether a conservative federal judge or a liberal federal judge, or you or me.

From the commentary: Biden understands what the choices are and what they involve, and after his performance of recent weeks, I trust him to make the right choice for himself, for the Democratic Party and for the country. ... But if he wants it, this much I can say: He deserves it.
From the commentary: Democrats are now saying they have done fantastically well, even better than they did when they had unified control of the federal government in the Obama years. It’s not persuasive. But it may be the best means available for them to rationalize coming down to earth.
From the editorial: So what should the GOP do? ... It is painfully obvious. Job one is to send Trump packing in some face-saving but determinative way and get behind dignified alternatives.

From the commentary:
"Canadian Pacific Railway wants to merge with the Kansas City Southern Railway, and that means more oil-filled trains and dangerous freight ... What if trains moved people and not dirty oil? The U.S. has the least developed passenger train system of any first world country. That’s a shame."
From the commentary: The economy matters most of all. But the return to view of some traditional issues — abortion rights and taxing the wealthy — have helped Democrats regain their mojo. They should do their best to stick with that rather than open new fights or reopen old ones.
