To the drug dealers from out of town: Stop bringing your poison to our communities. In the past few weeks, there have been seven heroin overdose deaths, with more than a dozen non-fatal cases, in the north-central Minnesota region.

There’s also been several more in the Fargo-Moorhead metro area.

Stop bringing death to our communities and reservations from the Twin Cities or Detroit or Chicago, as recent arrests have shown a pipeline of heroin, methamphetamine and other hard drugs from major U.S. cities to our region.

Already in Minnesota this year, law enforcement officers have seized 18 pounds of heroin, representing 82,000 doses and more than $1 million of product, it was reported last week. That’s already higher than last year and is only a pound away from becoming the highest total in the past five years.

This is an epidemic, and it needs to stop.

To the local drug dealers: Stop killing your brothers and sisters. The money you are “making” in no way whatsoever justifies the destruction caused by these substances. The pain you spread isn’t in some far off place - it is right here. How can you look in the mirror, knowing the pain and suffering you are causing? You are

decimating our families, leaving tragedy in the wake of your greed.

Go.

To law enforcement community near and far: Go forward with catching these individuals and networks who are preying on our communities.

Go to your prosecutors and demand these individuals receive the sentences they deserve. Go to your local government entity, whether it is city, county, state or federal and ask that they give you the resources you need to stop this scourge of heroin, methamphetamine, prescription pills and other illegal drugs. We support the Bemidji Police Department, the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office, the Red Lake Police, Leech Lake Police, Cass County Sheriff’s Office and the Paul Bunyan Drug Task Force in their efforts to rid our towns and reservations of this evil.

To the government and the politicians: Go to these communities.

See what destruction is caused by not taking these drugs off our streets. Go spend the money to fund these law enforcement agencies and health care programs to help drug abusers.

And to the drug users: Go and seek help.

Beltrami and Cass counties, the reservations and some cities and towns have various drug and alcohol addiction programs. There are also private programs. A good website for you is: https://findtreatment.samhsa.gov/ . Just type in your community and you will get a list of helpful programs. We typed in Bemidji and found 15 programs in the immediate area.

And we know we haven’t even talked about a legal substance that can cause just as much death and destruction: Alcohol. And like alcoholism, we know that drug addiction is a disease, and you need help. Go get it. You will be supported in your efforts. While we can discuss the societal ills of joblessness, poverty and crime, ultimately a person makes a decision to use illegal drugs. Go and make the right choice.

To all of us: Let’s go forward and make the Bemidji area a drug-free region.
