On Oct. 15, 2021 — just three months ago — CentraCare Hospital of Sauk Centre announced that their facility was full with COVID patients. They could not accept any additional patients — even emergencies.

Fifty years earlier — to the day — as a result of a farm accident, I nearly lost a foot. My dad rushed me to that same hospital. In shock from loss of blood, and still bleeding, where would he have taken me if that had happened this past Oct. 15, 2021?

Our health care facilities are again having to turn people away due to the surge in COVID hospitalizations. Where would you take your loved one today if your hospital cannot accept new patients — even emergencies caused by heart attacks, car accidents or snow-blower injuries?

On Jan. 13 at a special Kandiyohi County Board meeting, I moved a motion to have all staff and the public wear masks in the public spaces of our county buildings. While we are just one entity, we are trying to do our small part to support the health care community, and hopefully slow down hospitalizations due to COVID-19.
