A crash in June 2021 near Dassel that seriously injured a passenger led to a felony conviction of criminal vehicular operation against the driver, who told authorities at the scene that the woman was overdosing and he was trying to rush her to medical assistance. The woman later confirmed that to the court, and he will not serve any prison time.
Two felony charges and 10 other lesser charges have been filed in Meeker County District Court against the Dassel man who barricaded himself in his home Monday and Tuesday after reports that he had threatened a family member. SWAT teams from several agencies responded, and he eventually surrendered. Officers found evidence in the home that they believe indicates the man fired in the direction of law enforcement.
A man had threatened to shoot family members the evening of Aug. 1, then barricaded himself in his home. He finally exited his home at approximately 9:45 p.m. Aug. 2 and was taken into custody.
According to a news release from the Meeker County Sheriff's Office, a standoff was still underway as of noon Tuesday, south of Dassel, with a barricaded subject who was reported to have been threatening family members Monday evening. Authorities have been trying to negotiate with him.
Meeker County Jail staff attempted life-saving measures after finding a 28-year-old man unresponsive in his cell Thursday, the sheriff reported in a news release. The man was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. There is no evidence of foul play at this time, according to Sheriff Brian Cruze.
