Willmar Police subdue man, take into custody after standoff at residence

Marshall takes advantage of Willmar mistakes

MARSHALL—Four different Marshall players scored goals and goalie Trey Nelson stopped 16 shots in the Tigers' 4-0 win over Willmar on Tuesday.

Marshall scored two power play goals in the second period and the Tigers' two even-strength goals came on breakaways.

"We had a good third period," said Willmar head Jamie Hagen. "But (Marshall) made us pay for our penalties."

The Cardinals play host to Prairie Centre for Senior Night at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Willmar Civic Center.

Canby picked up three wins in the final five matches to edge United 37-29 in the United Triangular on Tuesday in Dawson.

In a 41-27 win over Wabasso/Red Rock Central, United's Griffin Johnson (113), Joey Foss (132) and Cole Bungarden (220) won their matches by fall.

United's Layton Wittnebel (126) and Peyton Mortenson (160) both earned four points with major decisions.

Against Canby, United's Seth Hubbard (106), Mortenson (160) and Austin Schmitt (182) won matches by pin, and Trevon Johnson (120), Kanten (138) and Bungarden (220) picked up major decisions.

Willmar boys sixth

Willmar's Ethan Haines finished in 16 minutes, 33 seconds at the St. Cloud Cathedral meet on Tuesday, good enough to single-handedly lead the Cardinals to a sixth-place finish in the seven-team race.

Mora won the boys race, Cathedral was second and Little Falls was third. Mora's John Schwinghamer placed first in 12:28.00

The Willmar girls placed seventh. Little Falls won the girls meet, St. Cloud Cathedral was second and Mora was third.

Willmar's Laura Christianson finished 20th in 18:09.00 and Marina Moyers was 24th in 18:51.00. Little Falls' Kendal Henrickson placed first in 14:58.00.

Willmar competes at Giants Ridge at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, then competes at St. John's Prep at 2 p.m., Jan. 12.

Men's Basketball

Ridgewater 76, Leech Lake 53

The Ridgewater men's basketball team opened the New Year with a win over Leech Lake on Tuesday.

Le'Darian McAllister led the Warriors with 17 points, Marvin Perkins had 13 and Devin Fostervolf finished with 12.

The Warriors are 9-2 and open MCAC play at Fergus Falls on Wednesday.

Women's Basketball

Ridgewater 82, Leech Lake 28

The Ridgewater women's basketball team returned from a holiday break and thumped Leech Lake on Tuesday.

Ridgewater's Kaitlynn Kienholz scored a game-high 28 points, Sarah Smith scored 22 and Anna Olson added 12.

The Warriors play the Concordia JV at 5:45 p.m. Thursday in Moorhead.
