Duo propels Stingers to victory
WILLMAR - John Trousdale crossed home plate three times and Jayson Newman got both a home run and the save in Willmar's 4-2 Northwoods League North Division win against Rochester Thursday at Bill Taunton Stadium.
The start of Thursday's game looked bad for the host Wingers as leadoff batter Nate Webb boosted the Honkers with a solo home run. The Stingers managed to tie the game an inning later when Shea Kramer drove in Trousdale with an RBI single. Kramer came through again in the fourth with a sacrifice fly that brought in Trousdale.
Then in the sixth, Willmar pulled away with one crack of the bat after Newman crushed a two-run home run for a three-run lead. Rochester's final run came in the seventh when Michael Michalak trotted home on a Christian Robinson double.
On the hill, starter Louie Varland collected the win for the Stingers with eight strikeouts and just three hits and one run allowed over six innings. Ben Mora and Newman combined for three scoreless innings of relief, with Newman earning the save with two strikeouts in 1-1/3 innings.
Olivia native and Rochester starter Logan Nissen was pegged with the loss after giving up two runs, four hits and two walks with four strikeouts in four innings of work.
The Stingers and Honkers will meet back at Bill Taunton Stadium at 7:05 p.m. Friday for Willmar's regular-season home finale.
