ST. CLOUD — Brandon Bohning was involved in three of Willmar’s runs on Monday, helping the Stingers gain a 1-0 advantage on St. Cloud in the opening round of the Northwoods League playoffs with a 4-1 victory on Monday at Joe Faber Field.
Scoreless through three innings, Bohning hit a two-out single that brought home Riley Johnson for a 1-0 Stingers lead. The Rox tied the game in the bottom half of the fourth, but Bohning came through again in the sixth with an RBI single that brought home Justin King. Bohning made it a 3-1 game when he reached home plate on an error following a Luke Bowman single. The Stingers’ final run came in the top of the ninth on a Johnson RBI single.
All the while, Polo Portela and Aldo Fernandez held St. Cloud to one run and three hits. Portela had seven strikeouts over seven innings to secure the win while Fernandez tossed two hitless innings to get the save.
The Stingers will try to move on to the next round on Tuesday when they host the Rox at Bill Taunton Stadium. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
