COLD SPRING — After sweeping Rocori on the road Tuesday, the Willmar baseball team is firmly in the driver’s seat of the Central Lakes Conference.

The Cardinals took Game 1, 9-1, then gave up just one hit in Game 2 for a 6-1 victory.

Andrew Baumgart started the opener for Willmar, striking out eight over six innings of work for the win. Then on offense, Baumgart was a single away from the cycle, going 3-for-3 with a home run, a triple, a double, two runs and two RBIs. Jett Salonek also had a homer for the Cardinals, finishing 1-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Sam Etterman added a pair of hits along with two RBIs, two stolen bases and a run scored.

In the night cap, the Spartans’ only hit came on a two-out single by Brady Blattner in the top of the sixth inning. Etterman started the game for Willmar, striking out four across 5-2/3 innings. Etterman was 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs. Ian Koosman and Baumgart were also 2-for-3 at the plate.

On Thursday, the Cardinals (9-0) are back at Bill Taunton Stadium to take on St. Cloud Apollo. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Jacob Norby went 1-for-3 with a double and RBI for the Braves (5-1 West Central, 7-2 overall).

Brady Snell went the distance for Montevideo, striking out five and walking two. He allowed four hits and one earned run.

“We were lucky to come out with two wins,” Benson head coach Mark Grussing said. “Montevideo’s a good team.”

Lac qui Parle Valley had 11 hits and a big fourth inning to beat Minneota at Madison.

Minneota (6-3) got a three-run home run from Ben Skorczewski in the top of the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead.

LQPV (3-1 Camden, 3-2 overall) answered with four runs in its half of the fourth to take a 5-4 lead.

Dain Mortenson led the way for the Eagles, going 3-for-3 with an RBI. Blake Wollschlager had a strong performance in relief to get the win. He struck out six, walked three and allowed two hits and one earned run in 3⅔ innings.

“It was a nice win,” LQPV head coach Bart Hill said.

The Eagles play Russell-Tyler-Ruthton at 5 p.m. Friday at Madison.
