Al Newman to throw out first pitch at Stingers' game

WILLMAR -- Former Minnesota Twins infielder and coach Al Newman will throw out the first pitch before the Willmar Stingers' game Thursday against the Rochester Honkers at Bill Taunton Stadium.

Newman will also sign autographs and will be available to take pictures. The gates open at 6 p.m. and the starting time for the game is 7:05 p.m.

Newman played collegiately for San Diego State University and was drafted by the California Angels in the third round of the 1979 draft. But Newman elected to stay in college and was drafted the next year by the Expos, where he played during the 1985 and '86 seasons before being traded to the Twins. He hit his only major league home runs in 1986.

With the Twins, Newman was an utility infielder on teams that won World Series championships in 1987 and 1991.

Newman finished his career with the Texas Rangers in 1991. In eight major league season, he had 476 hits and 156 RBI.

Known for his infectious personality and dedication toward community projects, Newman has spent his time after baseball coaching and raising money for athletic funds.

He managed the Twins Class AA New Britain team from 1996-97 and then was the Twins' third-base coach from 2002-2005.

Thursday's game is also T-shirt Night sponsored by Rambow Inc., in which the first 300 fans in attendance will be given a Stingers t-shirt.
