Amateur Baseball: Milroy clinches Region 9C berth

MILROY -- Milroy earned a spot in the upcoming Region 9C amateur baseball tournament with a 4-0 win over Raymond in the Cornbelt South League playoffs Sunday.

Milroy (29-3) will host the winner of Wednesday's Sacred Heart at Raymond loser's bracket final on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. A second game at 4:30 p.m. would follow if necessary.

The Yankees scored three runs in the first inning with two outs. Eric Dolan had an RBI single and David Schmidt drove in two runs with a triple.

That was all starting pitcher Mahlon Zimmermann would need. The former Redwood Valley High School pitcher clamped down Raymond's offense, allowing just four hits. He struck out seven and walked two.

The Rockets had a scoring opportunity in the second inning when Jason Meyer led off with a double, but after a one-out walk, a double play ended Raymond's threat. Meyer had two of the team's hits.


Milroy tacked on a run in the fifth with Matt Bauer's single.

Tom DeBoer took the loss, allowing all four runs on seven hits in six innings. He struck out eight and walked one. Zach Nelson pitched the final two innings and gave up a hit.

Justin Schlemmer, Micah Gronli and Schmidt had two hits each to lead the Yankees.

Matt Koenen blanked the Islanders on four hits, walking one and fanning nine.

The loss at Sacred Heart eliminated Bird Island.

Sacred Heart got all its run production from Mitch Schwindt. He scored the the Saints' first run in the second on an infield error and singled in Josh Hebrink, who had singled and stole second, in the seventh.

Schwindt, Tyler Kleinhuizen, Ryan Hebrink, Mike Kuschel and Mike Johnson all had two hits.

Greg Helin went the first seven innings and took the loss. Tyler Hebrink had two of the Islanders' four hits.

The Saints are at Raymond on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., with the loser eliminated.
