Amateur Baseball: Regal beats Starbuck for region nod

REGAL -- Regal earned a place in the Region 15C Amateur baseball tournament by beating Starbuck 17-5 in eight innings during a Cornbelt North League playoff game Sunday.

The Eagles (14-8) will have to wait until next Sunday to determine their seeding. There will be two Cornbelt North games Saturday, then the winners play at Regal the next day. The Eagles will face the winner of that game for seeding.

Austen Hadley hit two home runs -- one ended the game by the 10-run rule -- and was the winning pitcher for Regal.

He smacked a solo home run in the third inning, pitched 5Zc innings and gave up two runs on four hits, then launched a three-run homer that gave the game its final score.

Hadley finished 5-for-6 with four RBI and five runs scored. Shane Radermacher added three hits.


Mike VanOverbeke, Mike Daniels and Andrew Olson had two hits each for Starbuck.

Paynesville 4, NL-Sunburg 2

Paynesville got all its runs in the sixth inning and reliever Doug Fuchs preserved the win for Jamie Paul.


Norway Lake-Sunburg rallied in the eighth. Alex Baker singled in Chris Braaten, who had walked, to make it 4-2.

The Lakers loaded the bases and with two outs and Fuchs relieved. He struck out the batter to end the inning and then pitched a 1-2-3 ninth as the Pirates avoided elimination.

Braaten, who picked up the loss, threw a strong game, except for the sixth. Consecutive run-scoring singles by Paul, Colin Spooner and Derek Stanger, and then a sacrifice fly by Fuchs made it 4-1.

The Lakers got one in the first off Paul when James Cortez doubled in Grant Johnson, who had walked.
