Raymond wins three over weekend to take region title

SACRED HEART — Eric Hulterstrum doubled in two runs in Raymond’s three-run fifth inning and the Rockets claimed the Region 4C championship 4-0 over New London-Spicer on Sunday.

The Rockets had to win three games over the weekend — including two wins over previously undefeated NLS — to win the region crown.

Raymond, NLS and third-place Bird Island claimed the region’s three Class C state tournament berths.

Raymond received a first-round bye and plays the winner of the Perham and Maple Lake first-round game at 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25.

NLS plays Howard Lake at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Maple Lake, and Bird Island plays Dumont at 11 a.m. Saturday in Maple Lake.


In their three wins over the weekend, Raymond pitchers surrendered 25 hits but allowed just two runs, winning both games with NLS in shutouts.

In the title game, the Rockets’ Cole Christensen allowed eight hits and three walks but kept the Twins off the scoreboard. He struck out seven. Reliever Zach Nelson got the final two outs of the game.

Raymond’s Eric Hulterstrum had two hits and drove in two runs and Jordan Smith and John Sawatzky drove in the Rockets other runs.

NLS pitchers Patrick Courtney and Adam Schrader allowed just four hits but three of the four Raymond runs were unearned.

NLS’ Jake Rambow was 4-for-4.

Calvin Kosminskas scattered eight hits as Raymond forced a second championship game on Sunday in Sacred Heart.


Kosminskas worked a complete game, walked one and struck out six. The Rockets John Sawatzky was 4-for-5 with a double and two RBIs and Eric Hulterstrum and Jordan Smith both had three hits and drove in runs.

NLS’ Adam Schrader had three hits.

Raymond’s strong, three-game pitching performances began with John Sawatzky’s and Zach Nelson’s work in a win over Bird Island in the losers’ bracket final.

Sawatzky allowed two runs and struck out six in seven innings to get the win, and Nelson allowed two hits in two scoreless innings.

Raymond’s Eric Hulterstrum had two hits, including a solo home run, and he scored three runs. Mike Jeseritz, Tyler Steen and Jon Broman all had doubles among their two hits.

Bird Island’s Reed Stadther had three hits and drove in a run.

Bird Island survived the furious final innings to earn Region 4C’s third and final playoff spot with a win over Sacred Heart on Saturday.

The win meant Bird Island could finish no lower than third place, thus earning the Bullfrogs a Class C playoff spot alongside region champion Raymond and second-place New London-Spicer.

Logan Nissen pitched seven shutout innings to get the win, and Jack Peppel had three hits and drove in a run. Jordan Sagedahl tripled and drove in two runs.

Sacred Heart’s Nate Hebrink homered and drove in two runs and Jeremy Hinderks and Trent Kjersten both had two hits.

A lead-off walk, and error and two run-scoring singles in the ninth inning lifted Sacred Heart to win over Regal in a Region 4C elimination game on Saturday in Sacred Heart.

In the ninth, Nate Hebrink led off with a walk, Jeremy Hinderks reached on an error and Mike Kuschel and Derik Johnson followed with RBI singles.

Hinderks got the complete-game win, allowing just five hits and striking out eight.

In a game that featured a walk-off home run and a near-perfect game, Bird Island stayed alive in the Region 4C losers bracket with a memorable, extra-inning win over Starbuck on Saturday in Sacred Heart.

The Bullfrogs ended the scoreless tie and the ball game on Dylan Gass’ two-run home run in the bottom of the 11th inning.

Bird Island’s Luke Kramer worked all 11 innings, allowing no hits and just a seventh-inning walk. Another Stars hitter reach on an error in the ninth. Kramer set down the first 18 batters he faced, then got 14 of the final 15 Stars he faces. He struck out 11.
