Amateur baseball roundup: ‘Frogs find way into finals

Bird Island beats Raymond to reach Region 4C championship.

SPICER — The Bird Island Bullfrogs found their way to bases all evening on Friday en route to a 7-2 victory over the Raymond Rockets to advance to the Region 4C championship game.

Bird Island recorded 16 hits in the win and never trailed the Rockets. Jared Dettmann led the Bullfrogs offensively. He went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and a run.

Five more Bird Island batters recorded multi-hit performances. Shawn Dollerschell went 3-for-6 with a double and one run. Trent Athmann, Logan Swann, Aidan Elfering and Dylan Gass each tallied two hits. Elfering tied Dettmann for a team-high two RBIs.

Elfering not only produced offensively, he pitched a complete game for the Bullfrogs. He struck out 14 batters, allowing six hits and two runs.

Raymond’s pair of runs came in the fifth inning to tie the game at 2-2. John Sawatzky and Paxton Nelson each scored.

After the Rockets knotted the game at 2-2, the Bullfrogs tacked on five combined runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

Tyler Steen and Brady Kienitz combined for four of the Rocket’s six hits. Steen went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Kienitz went 2-for-4.

Dollerschell opened up the scoring in the fourth inning for Bird Island, reaching home on an Elfering RBI single, before Swann scored to make it 2-0.

The Bullfrogs will play against Willmar, Atwater, Starbuck or Milroy in the Region 4C championship game at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 14, at the Green Lake Diamonds in Spicer.

Region 12C

Maple Lake 4, Litchfield 1

The Maple Lake Lakers defeated the Litchfield Blues 4-1 Friday evening to advance in the Region 12C tournament and clinch a top four seed for state at Optimist Park in Litchfield.

Hunter Malachek fueled the Lakers to victory. He pitched a complete game and Litchfield had no answers as he struck out 16 batters, allowing five hits, two walks and one run.

Seven Maple Lake batters recorded one hit. Malachek and Brock Goelz both hit solo home runs. Luke Fobbe and Grant Mergen had the other two RBIs for the Lakers.

Andrew Loch led all batters with two hits, accounting for 40% of Litchfield's hits (5). He batted in the Blues’ lone run of the game.
