Amateur Baseball: Starbuck clips No.-2 seed Chuckers in playoffs

ATWATER -- No. 6 seed Starbuck blanked No. 2 Atwater behind Jon Hoffman's two-hitter and Mike VanOverbeke helped back the 5-0 win with a two-run homer Sunday in the first round of the County Line League playoffs.

Hoffman struck out eight and walked three while surrendering singles to Josh Cunningham in the third and Justin Schroeder in the ninth.

The Stars scored single runs in the first and second and added two more in the third behind VanOverbeke's home run. Mike Andreas capped the scoring in the fifth with an RBI single.

Schroeder also worked the entire game on the hill, striking out 13 and giving up eight hits and five walks.

VanOverbeke, Zach Lagred and Chad Andreas had two hits each for Starbuck.

The second round of the league playoffs are scheduled for next Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Starbuck is at No. 4 New London-Spicer, Atwater is at No. 1 Norway Lake-Sunburg and No. 3 Regal hosts No. 5 Paynesville.

Norway Lake-Sunburg made efficient use of its offense, scoring 13 runs on 13 hits in a County Line League playoff victory on Sunday in Sunburg.

Aaron Zimmer hit a three-run homer for the Lakers and Grant Johnson had two hits and also drove in three runs. James Cortez had three hits and an RBI, and Justin Johnons, Jared Johnson also had a pair of hits.

Chris Braaten doubled in two runs to aid himself on the mound. He worked a complete game for the victory.

Paynesville's Brett Savelkoul hit a three-run homer and drove in five runs, and Ryan Hess and Adam Miller also drove in runs for the Bullfrogs.

The Lakers, now 11-3, are the top seed in the league playoffs and now play Atwater on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in Sunburg.

Four singles, two Regal errors and a sacrifice fly -- all in the ninth inning -- allowed New London-Spicer to produce five runs and advance to the winner's bracket.

Mike Danielson singled to lead off the NLS ninth and two infield errors followed to load the bases. Ben Kulset followed with a fly ball to centerfield before Kevin Soine, Jake Rambow and Scott Rambow followed with run-scoring singles to give the Twins an 8-5 lead. Soine's only hit of the game knocked in two runs.

Regal stranded runners on first and second when the game ended after Austen Hadley doubled in Nathan Beier to pull the Eagles within two.

Nathaniel Swoyer worked the eighth after relieving Soine in the seventh with one out to pick up the win. Jake Rambow got the last three outs to get the save.

Chris Beier knocked in three runs for Regal after collecting two doubles and two singles. Danielson finished 3-for-4 for NLS.

Sacred Heart was held scoreless for the first three innings of the ball game, but came alive, scoring in each of the last innings, and went on to defeat the Milroy Irish on Friday.

Mike Johnson, and Chris Totter each had three hits apiece for Sacred Heart. Johnson with a run scored, and a double, and Totter with two runs batted in. Daniel Frank lead the Irish with a double and an RBI.

Matt Koenen pitched a complete game for Sacred Heart, allowing only three runs on six hits, and issuing one walk. Milroy pitcher Daniel Frank took the loss, going five and a third innings, giving up four runs, four walks, while striking out four

Bird Island splits

MARSHALL -- A three-run third inning and strong pitching from Cody Curry led the Marshall A's to a 7-2 win over Bird Island on Saturday in the teams' final Cornbelt League game.

Curry worked a complete game, scattering seven hits while striking out two.

Shawn Dollerschell, Tyler Hebrink and Alex Gay all had two hits and Ben Maier had Bird Island's other hit.

Marshall's Ryan Engels had two hits and drove in four runs.

On Friday, Bird Island defeated Atwater 5-2 in a league game at Atwater.

Tyler Hebrink, Luke Kramer, Mark Neubauer and Andrew Brooks drove in runs for Bird Island.

Atwater's Josh Cunningham had an RBI.

Bird Island's Jesse Bjur earned the win working seven innings and allowing just two unearned runs. Dylan Gass finished up, allowing a hit and striking out three in two innings of relief.

Bird Island opens the league playoffs against Granite Falls at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Bird Island.
