Amateur Baseball: Watkins rallies to defeat Bird Island in 11C playoffs

BIRD ISLAND -- With two outs, Dan Berg singled in two ninth-inning runs and Lincoln Haugen also drove in a run in the inning as Watkins overcame a one-run deficit and downed Bird Island 5-3 in the first round of the Region 11C playoffs Friday.

Watkins moves on in the winners’ bracket to play either Raymond or Luxemburg at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in Bird Island.
The Bullfrogs play a losers’ bracket game against either Raymond or Luxemburg at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, also in Bird Island.
The teams were tied 1-1 through seven innings, with Mason Clark driving in a Bird Island run in the second.
Watkins took the lead in the eighth, but the Bullfrogs’ Logan Swann singled in Trent Athmann to tie the game in the bottom of the inning, and Tyler Hebrink scored the go-ahead run on a Watkins wild pitch.
In the bottom of the ninth, Bird Island put two men on with one out, but Watkins reliever Matt Geislinger struck out the two batters he faced to end the game.
