American Legion/VFW baseball roundup: Willmar handles Hutchinson, 14-1

Post 167 wraps up Marshall Wood Bat Tournament with a 2-1 record. New London-Spicer, meanwhile, takes the championship at the Mudhen Classic in Bird Island.

MARSHALL — The Willmar American Legion baseball team wrapped up the Marshall Wood Bat Tournament on Sunday with a 14-1 victory over Hutchinson Post 96.

The five-inning win enabled Willmar to finish 2-1 in the tournament. Post 167 lost to the Brookings Bandits 3-1 on Saturday after beating Alexandria 1-0.

Against Hutchinson, Sam Etterman went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Brandt Sunder, Ian Koosman and Hunter Magnuson all had two hits for Post 167.

Hutchinson came up with four hits.

Willmar’s next game is at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Sartell at Bill Taunton Stadium. Post 167 then plays at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Alexandria before heading to the New Ulm Tournament on Friday through Sunday.

The Brookings (S.D.) Post 74 Bandits shut down Willmar Post 167 on Saturday at the Marshall Wood Bat Tournament.

Willmar 1, Alexandria 0

Willmar Post 167 earned a walk-off win to beat Alexandria Post 87 late Friday in the Marshall Wood Bat Tournament.

Jason Malmgren went 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI for Willmar.

Dylan Arndorfer and Carter Schow combined to toss a one-hitter for Post 167. Arndorfer went the first 6-⅔ innings, striking out 17 and walking two, allowing the lone hit. Schow went the final 1-1/3 innings, striking out two and walking two.

Willmar’s Hunter Magnuson, who went 2-for-3 with a run and a hit-by-pitch, scored the run.

Glenwood-Lowry 4, Sauk Centre 2

Glenwood-Lowry Posts 187 & 253 defeated Sauk Centre Post 167 at home Saturday as the team rallied late, scoring a combined three runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Glenwood-Lowry’s Paul Johnson threw a complete game. He allowed two runs - zero earned - while adding 10 strikeouts.

Johnson also had a strong game offensively for Glenwood-Lowry. He went 1-for-2 with two RBI’s.

West St. Paul 18, Sacred Heart/MACCRAY 13

West St. Paul got off to a quick start against Sacred Heart and battled en route to a victory at Sacred Heart.

After conceding an eight run lead, Sacred Heart/MACCRAY scored nine of their 13 runs in the third inning.

Isaac Haen brought in four runs for Sacred Heart/MACCRAY and scored two of his own, while Brooks Asche added three runs and an RBI.

The bats were alive for West St. Paul all evening. The team had 24 hits with Blake Eckmann leading the way with four hits, four RBI’s and three runs.

Christopher Schneider went 4-for-4 with a double, a home run and five RBIs for NLS. Luke Knudsen was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, two runs and an RBI.

Grant Paffrath got the complete-game pitching win, striking out two and walking two.

Braeden Fagerlie went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs to help Willmar Post 1639 beat Paynesville on Saturday at Paynesville.

Fagerlie also picked up the pitching victory, going five innings. Cullen Gregory went the final 1-1/3 innings for the save.

Willmar plays Paynesville at 7 p.m. Monday at Baker Field in Willmar, then faces Litchfield at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Baker.
