Post 1639 scores eight times in the inning to beat Paynesville, 9-3 at Bill Taunton Stadium

WILLMAR — A tight, closely contested game between Paynesville and Willmar VFW1 Post 1639 was blown open in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Sending 13 batters to the plate in the deciding frame, Post 1639 lit up the scoreboard for eight runs en route to a 9-3 victory Monday from Bill Taunton Stadium.

Tied 1-1 in the fifth, Willmar’s Jason Malmgren and Sergio Fernandez each walked to lead off the inning. Two batters later, the home squad took its first lead of the game when Conner Owens bunted home Malmgren from third.


From there, Post 1639 did the rest of its scoring with two outs. After Sam Etterman made it 3-1 with a bases-loaded walk, Alex Schramm and Ridgley Hulstein each produced RBI singles. The visitors allowed two more to cross the plate on a pair of infield errors.

Etterman led Willmar offensively, going 1-for-2 with a double, two walks and a run scored. Hulstein, the only player for Post 1639 with multiple hits, was 2-for-3 with a RBI and a stolen base. Schramm was 1-for-3 with two RBI and added a pair of stolen bases. Carter Schow reached safely twice, scoring each time.

Fernandez also reached twice and got the win on the mound. The right-hander gave up two runs (one earned) on eight hits and three walks with three strikeouts in six innings.

Paynesville equaled Post 1639 with eight hits, but could not muster much offense in support of Trent Wendlandt, who was tabbed with the loss after relinquishing three runs (two earned) on five hits and four walks. He also struck out four in 4-1/3 innings of work.


Eli Nelson was 2-for-3 with two stolen bases to lead the visitors.
