Area Notebook: New London-Spicer's Olson, Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa's Kampsen make all-state volleyball team

Wildcat, Jaguar seniors cap off careers with postseason honors. Plus, the 9-Man all-state football team includes a pair of Renville County West Jaguars and the Willmar Stingers welcome the return of Griffin Cheney and Asa Awbry to their roster in 2021.

New London-Spicer’s Ashlyn Olson and Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa’s Karsee Kampsen were named to the all-state volleyball team.

The all-state teams are voted on by members of the Minnesota Volleyball Coaches Association.

Olson, a senior right-side hitter for the Wildcats, was named to the Class AA all-state team after accounting for 118 kills (.349 kill percentage) and 36 blocks. A Class AA honorable mention selection in 2019 and a West Central Tribune all-area first-teamer this fall, Olson wraps up her prep career with 855 kills and 236 blocks. She continues her volleyball career at the University of North Dakota.

Kampsen, a senior setter for the Jaguars, was selected for the Class A all-state team after chalking up 335 set assists, 75 digs, 24 kills (.307 hitting percentage), 18 ace serves (.944 serve percentage) and seven blocks. A five-year starter for BBE, she finished with 3,369 assists, 805 digs, 164 ace serves and 68 blocks.

Two more area players were named all-state honorable mentions: Willmar senior libero Abby Stark (265 digs, 30 ace serves, 64 set assists, 17 kills) in Class AAA, and BBE junior libero Emily Kern (189 digs, 19 ace serves, 18 set assists, five kills) in Class A.

RCW duo named
9-Man All-State

Following an undefeated season and a Section 2 9-Man championship, Renville County West had two senior football players — Jaden Kolker and Riley Ashburn — voted to the 9-Man All-State team.

The 9-Man All-State team is voted on by 9-Man football coaches in the state.

Both Jaguars were selected on the defensive end, with Kolker at linebacker and Ashburn at defensive back.

Earning 9-Man All-State honors for the second time, Kolker finished the 2020 season with 44-1/2 tackles, three interceptions and a fumble recovery while being named the 9-Man South West Defensive Player of the Year. At running back on offense, Kolker had 632 rushing yards on 89 carries along with eight total touchdowns (seven rushing, one receiving). He was also selected to the West Central Tribune’s All-Area football team.

A safety for RCW, Ashburn came up with 30 tackles and two interceptions. He was also the Jaguars’ top receiving threat, with 20 receptions for 429 yards, seven touchdowns and four 2-point conversions.

RCW senior Brandan Hoberg was an honorable mention. Playing at quarterback and outside linebacker, Hoberg completed 49 percent of his passes for 662 yards, nine touchdowns and four interceptions while also running 85 times for 819 yards, 13 touchdowns and four 2-point conversions. On defense, he accounted for 35 tackles, two sacks, two interceptions, three forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and a defensive score.

Two more return
for Willmar Stingers

The Willmar Stingers announced on Tuesday that Griffin Cheney and Asa Awbry will return to the team for the 2021 season.

Cheney and Awbry join four other players set to return to Willmar next summer: Willmar High School grade Drey Dirksen (Augustana University); John Bezdicek (Southwest Minnesota State); Jack Zigan (Minnesota State-Mankato); and Kyle Scott (Cal Poly).

Cheney, from Georgia State, was sixth on the Stingers in 2020 with a .320 batting average, also tallying 33 runs, 26 RBIs, four doubles, seven stolen bases and four home runs.

Awbry, from Montevallo, played 13 games with six runs, four RBIs and three stolen bases.

The Stingers went 22-20 in 2020, placing third in the Minnesota-Iowa pod.
