Area participants open at state meet Thursday: State Tennis

MINNEAPOLIS -- Benson/KMS seniors Ben Murphy and Luke Widseth are in the doubles consolation semifinals of the Class A state individual tournament after splitting two matches Thursday.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Benson/KMS seniors Ben Murphy and Luke Widseth are in the doubles consolation semifinals of the Class A state individual tournament after splitting two matches Thursday.

Murphy-Widseth fell 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to Charle Velie and Will Hawkins of Blake in the opening round before bouncing back to beat the Montevideo duo of Charlie Landmark and Dakota Frazier 2-6, 6-1, 11-9 in the consolation quarterfinals. Murphy-Widseth will play Logan Engelstad and Micah Rodahl of Thief River Falls today at 8 a.m. at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center. The consolation final follows at 11:30 a.m.

Landmark-Frazier lost 6-1, 6-1 to Felix Mettke and Andrew Engel of Breck in their opening match. Ben Peters and Dylan Hoffman of Minnewaska were also 0-2 and eliminated from the tournament, losing 6-1, 6-0 to Connor Rust and Brian Utz of Rochester Lourdes and 6-0, 6-0 to Beezer Skime and Connor Hutton of Thief River Falls.

In singles, Jack Hansen of Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd was eliminated after falling 6-2, 6-0 to Daniel Carpenter of Breck and 6-4, 6-4 to George Humphrey of Blake.
