Area Wrestling Roundup: Willmar fires on all cylinders against Sartell, Brainerd

Cardinals sweep Sartell triangular; ACGC falls to top-ranked LPGE/Browerville

SARTELL — The Willmar wrestling team once again swept through the Central Lakes Conference competition Friday with wins over Sartell and Brainerd.

The Cardinals opened the triangular with a 58-20 victory over the host Sabres, followed by a 40-20 win over the Warriors.

“Honestly, they’ve been doing a lot of good things that we’ve been working on in practice,” said Willmar head coach Ed Oehlers. “We’ve wrestled well as a cohesive unit. I’m proud of them; they’re firing on all cylinders.”

Against Sartell, Conlan Carlson (113 pounds), Steven Cruze (132), Jonas Anez (152), Joe Kallevig (160), Tyler Ludwig (182), Kaden Streed (195) and Mason Swanson (220) all won by fall. Caden Carlson and Braeden Erickson had back-to-back tech falls at 138 and 145.

“These guys are a special unit,” Oehlers said. “It’s been nice working with them. They’re super respectful and they’re focused on the task at hand.”

On Tuesday, the Cardinals return to the Big Red Gym for senior night, hosting Perham and Waconia in a triangular. Willmar will open the meet with Perham, followed with the Wildcats in the final match.

According to The Guillotine, Waconia is ranked sixth in Class AAA, while Perham is in the Class AA Lean and Mean. Willmar is in the Class AAA Lean and Mean.

Eric Garcia (126 pounds), Jonas Anez (152) and Mason Swanson (220) all scored falls for the Cardinals. Conlan Carlson (113) won by tech fall, and Joe Kallevig (160) and Kaden Streed (195) got major decisions.

In a rematch of last year’s Class A championship, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Browerville prevailed once again over Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City in Long Prairie.

The Wolves are the top-ranked team in Class A while the Falcons are ranked third.

Hayden Straumann (132 pounds) scored ACGC’s lone fall. Taylor Fester added a major decision at 182.

At 113, top-ranked Jevon Williams gave the Falcons a 10-2 major decision against ninth-ranked Gavin Albers. The Falcons got another ranked win at 138 when Cole Holien (sixth, 126) got a 4-1 decision on Cael Lorentz (ninth, 132).

LPGE/Browerville also picked up a win earlier in the night over Thief River Falls, 34-20.

With falls in all seven of its wins, Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City knocked off Class AA standout Thief River Falls in Long Prairie.

The Prowlers entered the match ranked ninth in AA while the Falcons are third in A.

BBE, ranked second in the state in Class A, heads to Morris for a triangular Thursday. Perham also will be at the meet.
