Cards open 6AAA with victory


WILLMAR - Zak Madsen's home run and Drey Dirksen's double in the sixth inning were the key blows as Willmar defeated Dassel-Cokato 5-2 in the first round of the Section 6AAA playoffs on Tuesday at Bill Taunton Stadium.

Madsen's blast was part of a four-run inning that broke open a 1-1 game.

Drey Dirksen drove in Willmar's first run in the fourth inning and he doubled in the go-ahead run in the sixth. Madsen followed with his blast.

Brady Bauman and Caleb Ditmarson did the rest on the mound. Bauman worked 6-2/3 innings, allowing two unearned runs on four hits and striking out four to get the win. Ditmarson struck out D-C's final batter to earn the save.

Ditmarson had a hit and an RBI, and Andy Schultz had two hits, including a double, and scored a run. Caleb Owens had Willmar's other hit.

The No. 2-seed Cardinals (10-6) move onto the winners bracket semifinals and will play host at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Taunton Stadium to the winner of Wednesday's game between No. 3-seed Orono (11-7) and No. 6-seed Delano (9-9).

Jack Peppel smacked a triple and a home run in his four-RBI day to lead BOLD to a 9-0 win against Cleveland in the Section 2A playoffs.

Hayden Tersteeg allowed just four hits from the mound, striking out five in his shutout.

James Woelfel and Riley Weis each added three hits to the cause as well.

Dawson-Boyd broke out the bats in the first inning, scoring nine runs to take a commanding lead to get things going in the Section 3A playoffs.

Seven different Blackjacks logged hits, including Carter Anderson who was 3-for-4 with a double and pair of runs scored.

BBE took an early lead and held off St. John's Prep in a Section 6A game on Tuesday in Elrosa.

Three Jaguar pitchers combined to allow just two hits. Adam Jaeger started and allowed just two unearned runs over three innings while striking out seven. Thaniel Cebulla allowed an unearned run in two innings for the win, and Jackson Peter worked two scoreless innings to get the save.

Minnewaska kept its season alive with a four-run sixth inning, combined with a shutout performance from Matthew Gruber.

Brock Anderson kept the Lakers to just three hits but Minnewaska took advantage of six walks to get on the board and help out their pitcher.

Jake Hoffman drove in a pair of runs with a double.

Litchfield game suspended

Litchfield's Section 5AA game against Holy Family Catholic on Tuesday was suspended in the bottom of the third inning with the Dragons leading 2-0. The game will be resumed at 4:3o p.m. Wednesday.
