Prep Baseball: Two and out for BOLD

MANKATO - Sleepy Eye cut BOLD's dream season short with a 3-2 victory in the Section 2A final Thursday night at Franklin Rogers Park.

BOLD ends the season at 19-2 with both losses coming to Sleepy Eye, the tournament's No. 7 seed, in the playoffs.

The Indians, meanwhile, will head to the Class A state tournament which kicks off Thursday at the Chaska Athletic Park.

Sleepy Eye sent senior right-hander Avery Stevens to the bump to battle with BOLD ace and fellow senior James Woelfel for an old-fashioned pitchers duel that lived up to the hype.

Stevens started four of the five Section 2A games for the Indians but didn't show the wear on the turf mound Thursday night. The lanky St. Cloud State-commit struck out eight batters and scattered six hits in the complete-game performance.

"He mixed his pitches well," BOLD head coach Brian Kingery said. "It was an even mix and we couldn't get anything going. He's a good pitcher."

Hayden Tersteeg came up with two of those hits and scored the game's tying run on Andrew Sheehan's two-run double in the fourth inning.

Aside from Sheehan's double to the right-center gap, BOLD was unable to string hits together with its season on the line.

The Warriors threatened again in the fifth inning with a Jordan Sagedahl single and stolen base but Stevens struck out Woelfel to end the inning and the threat. The Warriors put one more runner on base in the final two innings.

Woelfel has been arguably the best pitcher in West Central Minnesota this season, but Landon Strong tagged him for a solo home run on the first pitch of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. Stevens followed that up with a single and eventually scored on Kyle Domeier's sacrifice fly to give Sleepy Eye a two-run lead.

Sleepy Eye kicked off the sixth inning with a Nathan Walter single followed by an overthrow on a bunt that put Indians on the corner with no outs. BOLD intentionally walked Strong to load the bases and struck out Stevens to get the first out of the inning but a pair of borderline pitches called as a ball led to walk that scored Walter and made the game 3-2. Woelfel forced a ground ball back to the mound for a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning but the damage was done.

Stevens got a groundout, a strikeout and a fly out to send his team to the state tournament.

"They were a good team," Kingery said. "We played a heck of a game. We made some good plays but that's baseball."
