Cards, Bulldogs open state baseball tourney Thursday

The Willmar and Paynesville baseball teams open Minnesota State Baseball Tournament play on Thursday.

In Class AAA, the Cardinals received the No. 5 seed and will face a familiar foe—No. 4-seed Alexandria—in the first round.

Willmar (13-6) and Alexandria (15-6) play at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Siebert Field on the University of Minnesota campus.

They are two of three Central Lakes Conference teams to make the eight-team Class AAA field. Willmar lost twice to Alexandria, 3-0 and 6-4, during the regular season. The Cardinals won both games against state-entrant Rocori, 5-3 and 3-2, during the conference schedule.

In Class AAA, top-seed Mahtomedi (28-4) plays unseeded Grand Rapids (10-15) at 10 a.m. All Class AAA first-round games are at Siebert.

Following the Willmar - Alexandria game, No. 2-seed Rocori (20-5) plays unseeded Red Wing (14-9) at 3 p.m., and No. 3-seed New Ulm (20-3) plays unseeded South St. Paul (14-9), at 5:30 p.m.

Class AAA semifinals games are at noon and 2:30 p.m. Friday at Siebert, and the championship game is 4 p.m. Saturday at Target Field.

In the Class AA tournament, Paynesville (19-4) drew the No. 3 seed and plays unseeded Jordan (14-8) at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Dick Putz Field in St. Cloud.

Top-seed Duluth Marshall (21-4) plays unseeded St. Cloud Cathedral (17-8) at 10 a.m. at Putz. In the 12:30 p.m. game, No. 4-seed Minnehaha Academy (16-5) plays No. 5-seed Caledonia (21-2) at Putz, and No. 2-seed Maple Lake (22-2) and unseeded Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton (22-2) play at 3 p.m.

The Class AA semifinals are at noon an 2:30 p.m. Friday at Putz, and the AA title game is 1 p.m. Saturday at Target Field.

Sunday's Game

Willmar 3, La Crosse 0

Braden Scott got back into a groove on Sunday, combining with Jordan Bonk and Jayson Newman to blank the Loggers in La Crosse in the opener of a two-game set.

Scott allowed three hits and struck out nine over 5-2/3 innings to get the win. Bonk worked 2-1/3 innings of hitless relief and Newman struck out the side in the ninth to get the save.

Willmar's Calvin Estrada homered, Newman had two hits and John Trousdale drove in a run.

The Loggers and Willmar play their second game at 6:35 p.m. Monday.

Saturday's Game

Willmar 6, Duluth 5

Tyler Reichenborn manufactured the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning and Jake Drew recorded a 1-2-3 bottom of the 10th as the Stingers clipped the Huskies on Saturday at Wade Stadium in Duluth.

Duluth scored all five runs in the first, but starter Nick Dentoni, reliever Jonathan McKinney and Drew shutout the Huskies the rest of the way.

McKinney allowed just a hit and two walks in four innings and Drew got the win, pitching the final two innings and allowing just one hit.

In the 10th, Reichenborn led off by getting hit by a pitch. He advanced to second on a passed ball, stole third and scored on Keaunu Dizor's fielder's choice.

Two Milroy pitchers held down Raymond's offense in a Cornbelt League game Sunday in Raymond.

Raymond's Brett Swanson hit a triple and a double and drove in a run and Cole Christianson took a tough loss. He allowed just one earned run over seven innings, didn't walk a batter and struck out six.

The Rockets play host to Sacred Heart at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Raymond won by the 10-run rule in strange fashion, breaking open a 5-5 game with 10 runs in the top of the seventh inning on Saturday.

Tyler Steen had a two-run double in the first inning and a solo home run in the third. He had three hits and drove in four runs.

Jordan Smith was 5-for-5 and drove in two runs, Calvin Kosminskas had three hits and drove in two and Eric Hulterstrum had two hits and an RBI.

Carter Block fired a five-hitter, striking out eight, as Litchfield defeated Willmar in the Central Minnesota VFW Baseball Classic on Saturday in Sartell.

Litchfield's Jack Ramthun had two hits and drove in three runs and Avery Liestman doubled and drove in two runs. Cade Marquardt had three hits, an RBI and he scored two runs.

Willmar Chase Dirksen was 2-for-2.
