  1. CLOUD - Paynesville’s Class AA state tournament game against Jordan on Thursday evening was delayed and the stands cleared in the third inning for about 30 minutes because of lightning near Dick Putz Field.

While the Bulldogs and fans escaped that threat, Jordan inflicted irreparable damage on Paynesville’s state championship hopes moments later.

The Hubmen broke open a tied game with a four-run fifth inning and defeated the Bulldogs 6-2 in the state quarterfinals.

With their championship chances dashed, the Bulldogs play Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton in the Class AA consolation bracket at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud.

The Bulldogs managed just three hits off Jordan starter Michael Lambrecht, who gave the Hubmen their first lead with a solo homer off the Putz Field scoreboard in left field in the second inning.

“We didn’t hit the ball well today,” said Paynesville head coach Brad Skoglund. “We only had the three hits and it’s tough to win a game like that. We needed to put more pressure on their defense.”

After Lambrecht helped his cause with his homer, teammate Logan St. Michaels singled in a run in the fourth.

Paynesville got the game to 2-2 when Jared Campbell singled and later scored in the bottom of the third, and Zach Osendorf ripped a solo homer to left in the fourth.

But the game got away from the Bulldogs in the fifth when Jordan scratched out four runs on three hits, two walks and two Paynesville errors.

While Paynesville rebounded twice to tie the game, Lambrecht thwarted any more comebacks after given the cushion in the fifth. He retired the final 10 Bulldogs he faced, allowed just one earned run in his seven innings of work, didn’t walk any Bulldogs and struck out three.

“He pitched a good game,” Skoglund said. “He moved the ball around and changed speeds. Give credit to them, they played better baseball than us today.”
