Stingers drop 2 in Duluth

DULUTH—The Willmar Stingers fought back for a tough win in a marathon game Tuesday night in Rochester but the aftereffects kicked in Wednesday as the Stingers dropped a pair to the Duluth Huskies.

Duluth used a four-run fifth to take a 7-4 win in game one Wednesday and ran away with things in the second leg, topping Willmar 11-2.

The Huskies hit Stinger starter Corey Binger hard in game two, scoring five runs on three hits in the opening frame to take an early lead. Duluth finished the game with 16 hits, including four from third baseman Tony Monroy, who also pitched the game's final inning.

John Trousdale led the Stingers with three hits and Caleb Ricca went 2-for-5 with a triple and run scored.

The Stingers will keep the road trip going with a visit across state lines to take on the Eau Claire Express. Game one of the two-game series is set for 6:35 p.m. Thursday.

Willmar's Davis Elliot had two hits, including a triple, and he drove in a run. Jaxon Hallmark drove in a pair of runs.

The Willmar Stingers got hot late, scoring five runs in the top of the 11th inning and downing Rochester in Rochester on Tuesday night.

In the 11th, tied 5-5, the Stingers loaded the bases and Richie Garcia singled in the go-ahead run. A walk, a wild pitch, a Caleb Ricca RBI single and Matt Rudick's sacrifice fly made it 10-5.

In the bottom of the 11th, Willmar reliever Brady Claunch set the Honkers down in order.

Reichenborn had four hits, including a home run and a double, and he drove in three runs. Ricca and Rudick both had two hits and drove in runs.

Teammate Mitchell Reiner provided some offensive support, slugging a game-winning solo home run in the sixth inning. Willmar's Tyler Johnson took the loss despite a complete game performance with seven strikeouts.
