Yang, Elvers power Stingers past Express

WILLMAR - Eric Yang and Cal Elvers both hit home runs and combined to drive in seven runs as the Willmar Stingers defeated Eau Claire 12-5 on Monday night at Bill Taunton Stadium.

Yang hit a two-run home run in the Stingers' four-run first inning and Elvers hit a three-run bomb in a five-run third that broke open a 4-4 tie.

The Stingers added three more runs in the sixth inning on a Tyler Reichenborn double, John Trousdale's sacrifice fly and Jayson Newman's run-scoring single. Newman also drove in a run in the first on a sacrifice fly.

Reichenborn also had two hits and scored three runs.

Willmar's Jonathan McKinney worked five innings to get the win, allowing two earned runs on six hits. Relievers Braxton Johns and Bryant Claunch each worked two innings to close out the game.

The Stingers and Express wrap a two-game set at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday and the Stingers hit the road to start at two-game set at Waterloo on Wednesday.

Isaac Call doubled in the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning as Kerkhoven edged New London-Spicer on Monday in Kerkhoven.

NLS scored twice in the top of the inning to take the lead but Kerkhoven countered with two of its own for the walk-off victory.

NLS took a 2-0 lead in the third but Kerkhoven scored five runs in the bottom of the third.

NLS scored twice in the fifth but Kerkhoven's lead held until the seventh. NLS loaded the bases, scored the tying run on an error and the go-ahead run on Christian Lessman's sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Regan Carlson reached on catcher's interference, reached second on a wild pitch and Cade Melin singled him home with the tying run.

Ethan Hauge pinch ran for Melin and he came around to score the winning run on Isaac Call's two-out double.

Kerkhoven travels to play at Litchfield at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Montevideo Tourney

The Osakis Legion team scored the winning run in all three of its games at the Montevideo Tournament in the seventh inning, including in a 6-5 victory over New London-Spicer in the championship game on Sunday.

In the third-place game, Dakota Valley defeated Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton 1-0.

First round scores: Osakis 6, Montevideo 5; DGF 5, Benson 0; NLS 6, Montevideo 3; Dakota Valley 9, Granite Falls 1.

Winners bracket scores: Osakis 2, DGF 1; NLS 10, Dakota Valley 0.

Losers bracket scores: Montevideo 9, Benson 8, DGF 5, Granite Falls 3. The remaining losers bracket games were cancelled because of rain.

Montevideo, which is putting the finishing touches on new dugouts, will be host to the Junior Legion Division II state tournament on Aug. 10-12.
