Willmar Legion wins two at wood bat tourney

AVON - The Willmar Legion Post 167 won both its games at the Albany Wood Bat Tournament on Saturday.

Willmar defeated the St. Cloud Chutes 4-2 and downed Dassel-Cokato 8-6 in nine innings.

Against the Chutes, Willmar's Nate Spencer had a run-scoring pinch hit single in the sixth inning to drive in the eventual winning run.

Caleb Ditmarson worked all seven innings, allowing an earned run on three hits while striking out eight.

Against D-C, Willmar tied the game at 5-5 with runs in the fourth and fifth innings that erased a two-run deficit.

In the ninth, Andy Schultz led off with a single, Jon Broman walked and Ditmarson brought them both around with a double. Jayden Dierenfeld then singled in Ditmarson.

Ditmarson had three hits, including two doubles, and he drove in four runs. Dierenfeld also had three hits and drove in two. Caleb Owens, Schultz, Broman and Jack Baumgart all had two hits. Grant Bangen got the win in relief.

Willmar is back at it on Monday, playing host to Sauk Centre at 7 p.m. at Bill Taunton Stadium.

Ashton Gregory had three hits and drove in three runs and Jett Solanek allowed just one hit and struck out eight at Willmar VFW Post 1639 defeated Morris in six innings on Saturday.

Tanner Bauman had two hits, drove in two runs and scored three runs, and Dalton Ogdahl had two hits, had an RBI and scored twice.

Clay Blair's run-scoring double and Mason Blair's sacrifice fly brought home to tying and winning runs for Minnewaska in the sixth inning on Saturday.

Minnewaska's Luke Barkheim had two hits and drove in a run, and he worked six innings to get the win. Clay Blair had three hits and two RBIs.

Willmar's Asaiah Smith had two hits and two RBIs, Andrew Baumgart and Dylan Arndorfer both had two hits and drove in runs and Hunter Magnuson had a hit and drove in two runs.

The long ball and solid pitching helped Raymond defeat Willmar on Sunday in the Rockerts' Hall of Fame game in Raymond.

During the afternoon, the Rockets honored Raymond Rockets Hall of Fame 2018 inductees John "Spike" Ennenga and Randy "Gren" Hultgren.

Brett Swanson led off the Rockets' half of the first inning with solo home run, Calvin Kosminskas led off the third with a homer and John Sawatzky hit a solo shot in the fifth.

Eric Hulterstrum also doubled and drove in a run.

Alex Lotthammer worked five innings to get the win and Cole Christensen, Jose Rosario and Zach Nelson pitch two-hit ball over the final four innings.

Willmar's Tanner Thunstedt had two hits and Brayden Sunder doubled.

Corey Binger continued an impressive string of starts and for the second-straight day Willmar held off a late rally to get the victory on Sunday in Bismarck.

Binger pitched five-hit ball and struck out four over seven innings. Binger improved to 3-1 and he has a 2.38 ERA in 34 innings. The Minnesota State Mankato junior has three wins in his five starts and he hasn't allowed a run in his three wins spanning 22 innings.

Cal Elvers had three hits, Jaxon Hallmark had two hits and an RBI, and Eli Wilson, Davis Elliot and Sebastian Samuels all had a hit and drove in runs.

Willmar almost blew a big lead in the late innings but the Stingers held off Mankato on Saturday at Bill Taunton Stadium.

The Stingers led 8-1 after five innings, but the MoonDogs scored six runs in the top of the ninth before reliever Jayson Newman put out the fire and got the save.

Willmar Tyler Reichenborn homered, Matt Rudick had three hits, including two doubles, and he drove in two runs, Eric Yang was 4-for-5 with a double and three RBIs, and Joey Ortiz had two hits and drove in three.
