Rails' comeback falls short
WILLMAR - Granite Falls held off a tough comeback Wednesday from the Willmar Rails and battled for a 10-9 victory at Elsie Klemmetson Memorial Field.
The Kilowatts scored a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning to extend the lead to 10-7 and the Rails came within one run but couldn't complete the comeback, leaving the tying run on third base following a strong two-out save from Colton Vien.
Noah Vreeman led all hitters with four hits and scored twice, finishing with a pair of doubles for the Rails. Josh Tinklenberg added three hits and two RBIs while Sam Vreeman scored four times.
Granite Falls took an early 6-0 lead through 3.5 innings but the Rails battled back with strong performances at the plate.
Lukas Kruse led the Kilowatts with three hits and three RBIs.

Raymond jumped out to a powerful 9-1 lead through one inning on the way to a blowout Wednesday night in Raymond.
Tyler Steen led the hitting barrage with three hits, including a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Brett Swanson and Calvin Kosminskas each joined with a pair of hits as well.
Brandon Wedel earned the win with five innings of work in the seven-inning ballgame.
The Rockets will try to keep the scoring going Friday with a visit to Milroy to take on the Yankees.

Starbuck overwhelmed Clinton Wednesday night with 12 hits on the way to a big win.
Justin Amundson led all hitters with three hits, including a triple. Michael Gruber, who finished with a pair of hits on the night, joined Amundson with two RBIs and two runs each.
Mike Kragenbring and Andrew Toop each posted a multi-hit games as well and Toop earned the win from the bump, throwing six innings with only one run, which was unearned, allowed.

Eric Loxtercamp finished with three triples and a single while fellow Springer Brian Hansen mashed a two singles, a double and a home run and scored four times.
Derek Dolezal was the lone multi-hit batter for the Twins.

Brandon Schmidt was a one-man wrecking crew for Granite Falls Wednesday night, tossing a shutout while driving in two of his team's three runs in a win over Sacred Heart/MACCRAY.
Schmidt drove in Bennett Knapper and Asa Ulferts with a double in the first inning to give his team the lead and provide plenty of cushion for his gem on the mound. He struck out seven and allowed just five hits and one walk.

The Willmar Stingers have been getting solid pitching as they've rattled off five straight Northwoods League wins. On Wednesday, the bats sounded out loudly.
The Stingers ripped 15 hits off four Honkers pitchers and won in a rout at Bill Taunton Stadium.
Tyler Reichenborn was 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs and he scored four runs.
Eli Wilson and Joey Ortiz both had three hits and three RBIs.
Willmar's pitching was superb again. Matt Ornelas allowed a hit and a walk in six innings.
Willmar's four-game homestand continues against Waterloo at 7:05 p.m. Thursday at Taunton.
