NLS Legion earns state berth

BIRD ISLAND—New London-Spicer kept its dream season alive with a resounding 16-1 victory over Holdingford in Game 3 of Central Sub-State finals Sunday afternoon to advance to the Division II State Tournament in Pelican Rapids.

The state tourney is Aug. 3-5 at Chauncey Martin Field in Pelican Rapids. NLS will be one of eight teams in the state tournament vying for a chance to represent Minnesota at the Division II Regional in Wahpeton, North Dakota the following weekend.

NLS rolled with to its five-inning victory thanks for a 13-5 lead in the hit column. Matt Spaulding joined his team's hit parade with a pair of doubles, scoring two runs and driving in another pair. Nick Perkins led all hitters with three hits and four RBIs.

Holdingford cycled through five pitchers to try and keep its season alive but NLS just looked to Christian Lessman to get the job done. He went all five innings, striking out five batters with only one run allowed in the fifth inning.

New London-Spicer rallied in the seventh inning to tie the game and force extra innings but came just short of completing the comeback again in the eighth inning of game two with Holdingford.

Holdingford jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead in the fourth inning but New London-Spicer scored in bunches, as they've been prone to do all postseason, and tied things at seven through seven innings. Holdingford responded, however, with four runs in the eighth inning and NLS finished just one run shy of tying things again.

NLS held a 16-15 lead in hits but ran into problems defensively with five errors.

Lane Gerads led Holdingford with four hits while Nick and John Perkins led for NLS, combining to go 6-for-9 with a double apiece, four RBIs and two runs scored.

New London-Spicer scored three runs in extra innings Saturday to take a 1-0 series lead in the Central Sub-State finals with Holdingford.

Jake Schmidt had a monster four-RBI game, hitting a home run and a double to rally NLS past Holdingford who led 4-0 through the first three innings.

Jon Kaelke relieved NLS starter Mitchell Kruger and pitched well, allowing just two hits over 5-2/3 scoreless innings to earn the win.

Kerkhoven couldn't overcome a rough third inning in which Breckenridge scored nine runs on the way to a 10-run victory.

Weston Gjerde led Kerkhoven with three of his team's 10 hits, driving in a pair of runs and scoring one of his own.

Breckenridge proved to be too powerful, racking up 14 hits on the way to victory.
