Montevideo will play host to the American Legion Division II Junior Legion State Tournament this weekend, and three area teams will compete in the eight-team field.
Sacred Heart/MACCRAY opens the tournament against Aitkin at 10 a.m. Friday. Starbuck plays Cook County at 12:30 p.m.
Following the tournament's opening ceremony at 3 p.m., Holy Family Catholic plays Caledonia at 4:30 p.m., and the host team, Montevideo, plays International Falls at 6:40 p.m.
On Saturday, the two consolation bracket semifinals games are at 10 a.m. at 12:30 p.m. The winners' bracket semifinals are at 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.
On Sunday, the consolation championship is at 10 a.m. and the third-place game is at 12:30 p.m. The state championship game begins at 3:30 p.m.
Stingers in Dream showcase
Three Willmar Stingers players took part in the Northwoods League's Major League Dreams Showcase on Tuesday in Madison, Wis.
In their team's 3-2 win, Stinger Eli Wilson caught and went 0-for-2.
Willmar pitcher Louie Varland worked the third inning and allowed one hit and struck out two.
Stinger reliever Nick Mears worked a hitless seventh inning, walking one and striking out one.
The Stingers return to regular-season action at Eau Claire today at 6:35 p.m.
Willmar plays its final two home games of the regular season against Rochester at 7:05 p.m. on both Thursday and Friday. The team closes out the regular season with games at Thunder Bay on Saturday and Sunday.
The Stingers are in the hunt for a NWL playoff spot, sitting just a half-game behind North Division-leading Duluth.
Bulthuis records ace
Troy Bulthuis, of Willmar, recorded a hole-in-one at Valley Golf on Aug. 3.
Bulthuis aced the 143-yard, No. 5 hole using an 8-iron.
