State amateur tourney begins Saturday

Three area amateur baseball teams open play in the Class C state tournament the next two weekends in New Prague and Shakopee.

New London-Spicer, the Region 4C runner-up, plays a first-round game against Howard Lake at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in New Prague.

Raymond, the 4C third-place team, plays Princeton at 5 p.m. Sunday in New Prague.

Milroy, the 4C champion, gets a first-round bye and plays either Lake City or Delano in a second-round game at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 26, in Shakopee.

Third-round games are Sept. 1 at the two sites, and quarterfinals and semifinals games are Sept. 2. The championship game is Monday, Sept. 3, at 3 p.m. in New Prague.

Raymond wins two

The Raymond Rockets qualified for the Class C state tournament for the eighth time in the last nine years by winning two weekend losers' bracket games in Atwater.

Raymond defeated Granite Falls 6-1 on Saturday, with Calvin Kosminskas hitting a two-run home run in the fourth and Jordan Smith knocking in two runs in the seventh inning.

Alex Lotthammer worked eight innings, striking out 11 and allowing just an unearned run on five hits.

Raymond secured a state spot with a 10-0 win over Regal. Tyler Steen came within one home run of hitting for the "home run cycle." Steen hit a two-run homer in the third, a grand slam in the fourth, and a solo shot in the sixth. He drove in seven of the Rockets' runs.

Steen set the Rockets' single-season records with 16 home runs and 66 runs batted in this season.

Brett Swanson also homered and drove in two runs, and Cole Christensen got the win with six shutout innings.

Raymond fell in the losers' bracket final to New London-Spicer, which pushed Milroy to two games before losing in the Region 4C championship.
