WILLMAR - It was a night for pitchers on Tuesday at Bill Taunton Stadium.

Willmar starter Garret Rukes and two Stingers relievers out-dueled a trio of Rochester arms in a 1-0 win.

The first Stingers hitter of the game, Sam Baier, singled and eventually came around to score the game's lone run.

Rukes worked seven innings, allowing five hits and a walk while striking out four. Jake Marsh relieved Rukes in the eighth and allowed a hit, and Aldo Fernandez picked up the save setting the Honkers down in order in the ninth.

Rochester's Dwayne Marshall took the loss, allowing the run on four hits while striking out five. Honkers relievers Mike Lopez and Mitchel Allen limited the Stingers to just two hits over the final four innings.

Baier led off the bottom of the first with a single and he then stole second. Baier moved to third on Branden Boissiere's groundout to short, and he scored on Tyler Bosetti's groundout to short.

Cal Elvers had two of the Stingers' six hits, including a double. Evan Berkey (three hits) and Tristan Peterson (two hits) combined for five of the Honkers' six hits.

The Stingers and Honkers play the second game of a two-game set at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday at Taunton.
