WATERLOO, Iowa — Don’t look now, but the Willmar Stingers are in first place in the Northwoods League.

Willmar moved atop the standings Sunday with a 2-1, 10-inning victory over Waterloo before 428 fans at Riverfront Stadium.

The Stingers are 7-2 in the league, one-half game ahead of the Bucks, who are 7-3.

Willmar tied it at 1-1 in the eighth on a solo home run by Kyle Mazardo. The first baseman from Washington State University smacked his third homer in six games with the Stingers.

In the 10th inning, Jaxon Hallmark’s sacrifice fly scored Cesar Lopez, who had reached on a walk and advanced on an error. Hallmark played center field Sunday and plays for the University of Nebraska.

Jonathan Brand got the pitching win. The sophomore right-hander from Miami of Ohio went 3.2 innings, allowing one hit and striking out three. Tanner Brown, a left-hander from Augustana, got the final out on a strikeout after allowing one hit.

Noah Cameron, a left-hander from Central Arkansas, went six innings, striking out six and walking two. He allowed five hits and one earned run.

The Bucks and Stingers complete their series at 6:35 p.m. Monday at Riverfront Stadium. Willmar then returns home to play the Rochester Honkers at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday at Bill Taunton Stadium.
