WILLMAR — Junior infielder Jack Pineda and freshman pitcher Andy Owen are making their way from Waco, Texas, to Willmar for the 2021 Northwoods League season.
Pineda and Owen come to the Willmar Stingers from Baylor University. Their signings were announced Thursday.
“We have a long relationship with coach Rod (Steve Rodriguez) and assistant coach Jon Strauss, even back (when) they were at Pepperdine University,” said Stingers co-owner Ryan Voz in a statement.
Pineda’s and Owen’s signings mean that the Stingers now have 18 players under contract for the 2021 season.
Pineda is from Albuquerque, New Mexico. He spent two seasons at the College of Southern Nevada, earning first-team all-conference honors as a second baseman. He batted .350 as a freshman with a.990 fielding percentage.
Owen, a right-hander, is from Turlock, California. In a shortened senior high-school season, he had 21 strikeouts in 10 innings with a 1.30 earned-run average. As a junior, he struck out 65 in 45 innings with a 2.00 ERA. That earned him first team All-Delta League honors.
Willmar opens the season Monday, May 31, at Bismarck. The Stingers’ home opener is 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, against the Eau Claire Express at Bill Taunton Stadium.
