WILLMAR — Post 167 found success in its home opener, earning an 8-4 American Legion baseball win over the St. Cloud Chutes on Tuesday at Bill Taunton Stadium.
Despite giving up two runs in the top of the first, Post 167 tied it up in the bottom of the first. Willmar went on to take a three-run lead in the bottom of the second and never gave up the lead again.
“We played great. The boys just came back and responded and that’s what’s impressive,” Post 167 manager Doug Ruter said. “They were having fun. It was a beautiful night.”
Hunter Magnuson earned the win on the mound, pitching all seven innings, giving up nine hits but striking out eight Chutes batters. The Chutes are made up of players from St. Cloud Cathedral High School.
“(Magnuson) pitched great tonight,” Ruter said.
Ian Koosman, Andrew Baumgart and Alex Schramm each had a multi-hit game with each having two hits, both of Schram’s hits being doubles. All three scored one run and notched at least one RBI.
With the victory, Willmar Post 167 is on a two-game winning streak and will host Litchfield at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bill Taunton Stadium.
