DULUTH — Prior to losing 9-2 to the Duluth Huskies on Sunday, the Willmar Stingers earned an 11-4 victory on Saturday, ending the weekend with a 1-1 split at Wade Stadium.
The Huskies (20-30) out-hit the Stingers (25-29) Sunday afternoon 13-4 in front of 1,085 spectators. The Huskies scored at least one run in every inning except the fourth inning.
Third baseman William Hamiter recorded three of the Stingers’ four total hits on Sunday including an RBI double in the sixth inning. He also scored the team’s first run in the top of the fourth after trailing 3-0. The redshirt University of Alabama freshman is currently hitting .365.
At the mound, Willmar had five pitchers at the mound on Sunday.
Kelllen Brothers, the right-handed pitcher from Oklahoma Wesleyan University, took the loss, allowing five hits and giving up three runs in three innings pitched. Brothers struck out two batters and walked none.
Huskies’ right-handed pitcher Will McEntire tallied the win after pitching seven complete innings with nine strikeouts and one walk.
On Saturday, a late seven-run inning helped seal the deal for Willmar’s victory over Duluth in Game 1.
The Huskies held a 3-0 lead after two innings in front of an attendance of 677.
Grant Kerry scored the first run for the Stingers on a grounder by Drey Dirksen in the top of the fourth, narrowing the deficit to 3-1.
Willmar batter Jorge Lucero brought home the first run of the inning with an RBI double. Lucero eventually scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 3-3 before Duluth went ahead in the bottom half of the inning.
Josh Fitzgerald, Jakob Newton, Kerry, Hamiter, and Dirksen scored in the seventh inning. Willmar finished the frame with seven runs on four hits with three men on base.
Carter Howell, Brady Counsell and Jakob Newton all had multi-hits in Saturday's victory.
Howell, the redshirt junior from Augustana University, hit 2 of 5 with two runs, a walk and a stolen base. Counsell, the upcoming University of Minnesota infielder, hit 2 of 5 with an RBI, a double and a run scored. Newton, the junior outfielder from Florida Institute of Technology, hit 2 of 4 with a run, two RBI and a walk.
Duke Coborn, the right-handed pitcher from the University of St. Thomas, pitched four innings for Willmar before being replaced by a fellow Tommie in right-hander Jeremy Klick. Klick earned the win with two innings pitched, giving up two hits, walking two batters and striking out one.
The Stingers are now 9-9 in the second half of the season and are currently sitting fourth in the Great Plains West division.
Willmar has a three-day break before returning to Bill Taunton Stadium for a two-game series against the Duluth Huskies. Game 1 is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Thursday at Baker Field.
