KERKHOVEN — Hosting MACCRAY Monday evening, Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg trailed for the majority of the contest, but pulled it together when it most mattered.

Scoring their final six points from the free-throw line, the Fighting Saints earned their first victory of the season following a 45-42 girls basketball triumph from KMS High School.

The road tem inbounded the ball with five seconds left, but after traveling the length of the floor, a potential game-tying 3-pointer bounced off the rim at the buzzer.

After the Wolverines went up 42-41, KMS posted the final four points of the game. The team also scored the first two points of the contest, but did not taste the lead until the second half.

Enjoying as much as an eight-point cushion, the visitors entered halftime with a 21-17 advantage. MACCRAY’s lead ballooned to 28-18 before the Fighting Saints tied the game with a 10-0 run. The Wolverines scored the next five points, but a 7-0 surge put KMS ahead for the first time since the scoreboard read 2-0.

With a pair of makes from beyond the arc, junior guard Maret Gjerde led all players with 17 points while center Madison Rohner added 11 points and 16 rebounds for the home team. Collecting all of her points from the charity stripe, Fighting Saints senior Morgan Lesteberg chipped in six points and seven steals.

In the second half alone, KMS went 18-for-24 from the foul line. The team will try to make it two in a row on the road versus Central Minnesota Christian 7:30 p.m. Thursday from Prinsburg.

Behind three 3-pointers, sophomore guard Ella Bourne scored 15 points to pace MACCRAY, who will try to get its first win of the 2019-20 campaign at home against Renville County West 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Clara City.

For the first time since Feb. 16, 2018, Renville found itself in the win column, snapping a 26-game losing streak in a 44-39 Camden Conference win over Dawson-Boyd on Monday.

Lauren Wulf was the catalyst for the Jaguars with 19 points, 10 rebounds and four steals. Hannah Pharr came up with 10 points, and Vanessa Savig hauled in 13 rebounds in the victory.

The Blackjacks’ Avery Bartunek scored a game-high 23 points while also coming away with 10 rebounds and eight steals.

RCW continues its season-opening homestand Tuesday against Hancock. Dawson-Boyd returns home Thursday to host Lac qui Parle Valley.

Abby Rost had 15 points for the Vikings, followed by 10 from Morgan Hennen.

Madison Hinz hit four 3-pointers to lead the Sting with 15 points while also tallying three assists and a pair of steals. Teammate Shelby Mortenson came up with six points and nine rebounds.
