BROOTEN — With both teams searching for win number one, Paynesville was in a hurry to get in the win column.

With a defense holding Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa to 12 points in the opening half, the Bulldogs used the transition game to get out of the loss column with a 62-43 Central Minnesota Conference win over the host Jaguars on Monday.

Up 18-10 with 6:06 left before halftime, Paynesville ended the half on a 10-2 run as the Bulldogs’ length gave BBE plenty of problems with four blocks and plenty of deflections that led to 12 turnovers.

Corbin Froelich led the way for Paynesville with 26 points along with seven rebounds. Levi Bast chipped in with 12 points, and Brendan Uhlenkamp was credited with 11 points, seven rebounds, three blocks and three steals.

Kade Pieper had 11 points for the Jaguars, hitting 3 of 6 shots from 3-point range. Ryan Schwinghammer approached a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds, and Evan Jones tallied seven points and 12 rebounds.

Paynesville returns home Thursday for a non-conference game against Litchfield while BBE has a non-conference game of its own Tuesday against Benson.
