BBE girls down ACGC

BROOTEN - Hailey Braegelman scored 14 points and Macie Kirckof had 10 to lead the BBE girls basketball team to a 61-31 victory over ACGC on Monday.

Kendra Schmitz and Morgan Gronli both scored nine points and Gronli also had four steals.

Nicole Wesbur scored five points and led the Jaguars with 10 rebounds. Jenna Fischer finished with six points and four assists.

BOLD jumped out to a big 42-19 lead at halftime and kept up the pressure in the second half for a big win over Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart.

Makenna Steffel led the way with 17 points and made her presence felt throughout the game with eight rebounds, five assists and seven steals.

Sara Kottke was BLHS' leading scorer with 12 points.

Minnewaska earned its eighth straight win and Bayley Pooler scored her 1,000th career point as the Lakers downed Yellow Medicine East.

Pooler needed 14 points to reach the milestone and she did so with 17 points on the night. Ellie Danielson, however, led the game with 20 points.

YME's Hannah Gullickson scored 15 points while teammates Madi Hinz and Anna McCosh each scored 13 and 12.

Willmar girls sixth

The Willmar girls Nordic ski team placed sixth at the Bemidji Pursuits Race on Saturday in Bemidji.

The Cardinals boys team placed eighth in the event which featured both classic and freestyle races.

Willmar's Laura Christianson finished with a combined time of 50 minutes, 35 seconds. Katelyn Cook was 47th in 51:43.0, Marina Moyers was 49th in 52:31.0 and Joely Palmer was 53rd in 55:53.0.

Little Falls had the first five finishers and won the girls meet, followed by Bemidji, Alexandria, Moorhead and Brainerd.

In the boys race, Willmar's Andrew Haugen placed 39th in 41:41.0. Josh Johannes was 53rd in 47:22.0, Erik Heen was 55th in 48:10, Marguis Christenson was 56th 48:14.0 and Emanual Ciriaco-Vera was 57th in 49:56.0.

The Little Falls boys team won, followed by Brainerd, Bemidji, Alexandria and Moorhead.

Aarhus to play for national team

Shawn Aarhus only played in six games this season for Benson's football team but that was enough to earn national recognition. The defensive lineman is now set to play for the U.S. Under-18 National Team on Jan. 28 at ESPN's Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida.

Aarhus collected 16 solo tackles and 25 assists including seven for a loss with a fumble recovery last season to earn a spot on the Tribune's all-area honorable mention team. He also was named the Mid-State Sub 2 Defensive Lineman of the Year.

The 6-foot-4 senior also spent time at offensive tackle for the Braves but will spend his time on the national team as a defensive end. He joins a team with players from across the country. Linebackers coach Matt Geginheimer is the only other Minnesotan on the team. He coaches at Prior Lake.

The Americans will have a tough battle as they take on the Canadian Under-18 team on Jan. 28. It has been a one-sided rivalry as the Canadians have won all six games in Under-18 competition.

Reid wins junior golf tourney

Willmar Community Christian School golfer Brett Reid won the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour's Callaway Gardens Junior Challenge over the weekend at the Mountain View course in Pine Mountain, Georgia.

Reid shot a two-day total of 149 to win by three shots over Luke Phillips, of Peachtree, Georgia, and Brendan Farrell, of Dunwoody, Georgia.

Reid shot a three-over 75 on Saturday and a two-over 74 on Sunday. Reid also led the field with six birdies.

Reid plays in the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour's 14-15 division. The tour hosts 275 events in 32 states this year.
