Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa’s Brian Goodwin is among five finalists for Minnesota Mr. Basketball.
The 6-foot-4 senior guard leads the Jaguars in the quarterfinals of the Class A Minnesota State Boys Basketball Tournament against Park Christian at 11 a.m. today at Williams Arena.
The other finalists are: Wheeler Baker, 6-foot-2, from Osseo; Tyus Jones, 6-1, from Apple Valley; J.P. Macura, 6-6, from Lakeville North; and Reid Travis, 6-8, from DeLaSalle.
The 2014 Mr. Basketball will be announced at the end of this weekend’s state tournament.
Goodwin surpassed 2,000 career points this season and is averaging 24 points, 4.4 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 3.1 steals per game.

The Jaguars are 118-4 during Goodwin’s four years as a starter.
He started as a freshman a 2011 Jaguars team that was 32-1 record and was the Class A runner-up, and he led the team to a 33-0 mark and the Class A state championship as a sophomore. Last year the team was 25-2 and they bring a 28-1 record into this years tournament.
Goodwin is the Tribune-area’s eighth Mr. Basketball candidate since the award was first announced in 1975: Alex Carlson, Litchfield (2000); Luke Jimenez, Redwood Falls and Jamie Swenson, New London-Spicer (1996); Jeff Nordgaard, Dawson-Boyd (1991); Paul VanDenEinde, Willmar (1983); Barry Wohler, Bird Island-Lake Lillian (1981); and Kevin Mulder, Renville (1975).
