MONTEVIDEO -- Benson put itself two wins from the American Legion State Tournament with a 4-1 win over Wheaton Friday.
The victory, pitched by Jed Eix, puts Benson into the championship round against Eden Valley.
Benson lost to Eden Valley 8-6 on Thursday and must now beat the favorites twice today starting at 11 a.m., at the high school field in Montevideo.
Both Wheaton and Benson finished with six hits and both starting pitchers walked three. But Benson played errorless ball in the field while the defending district champions committed four errors. Balks and wild pitches by losing pitcher Dylan McCalip also figured into Benson's two-run innings in both the first and the sixth.
Benson jumped out 2-0 when leadoff Brennan Kent singled, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a balk. Dan Martin, who had walked, later came home on a wild pitch.
Benson went up 4-0 when Cameron Simmonds doubled, was balked to third and came home on an error by the shortstop.
Andrew Simmonds, who had reached on the run-scoring error, crossed the plate on Anthony Frank's sacrifice fly.
Wheaton's Austen Gray, who was 2-for-3, singled home Riley Nelson, who had led off the seventh with a walk.
But Eix shut Wheaton down after that and Benson ran its record to 5-1 in postseason play.
